Here's the problem, Stephie - half of these books that have "sprung out of nowhere" were published BEFORE the Twilight craze. (ie. while Twilight was around, just not during the "aaaiiiie! Edwaaaard!" period.)

They just gained a little (or, perhaps, a lot) of publicity from the Twilight franchise - but they're not trying to "cash in" on what she's done.
The publishers (sorry, Penguin...) might be, though - knowing that both antis and twihards will be looking for "similar" novels or one that are "better".

They're not being try-hards. You guys are just buying their books. :D

And Meyers' books are so very NOT unique. It may be coincidence, but I've read a set of FOUR (ahem, yes FOUR) adult Vampire fiction books which have concepts, plots and characters that are frighteningly similar to "Twilight" & Co.

And the Twihards shout: No way! That author must've been copying Meyeeeer!

And I say? - All four books were published during the mid nineties by an esteemed horror/thriller/romance author.

No plot is completely unique, readers. Every novel out there is a mix of previous works, and those works a mix of pre... you get the point, right?

And even if we go back to Shakespeare (or earlier), then those plots would be based on real stories... or Greek myths... or something...just embellished ten times more.

So there ya go. Can't be bothered explaining any more....

Don't bite my head off for saying this, but don't you think the vampire academy and all the other vampire novels that have just sprung out of nowhere are just trying to cash in on Stephenie Meyers sucsess? Twilight books are original and completely ONE OF A KIND!!!

Rose is awesome. She's a much stronger character than Bella in Twilight. When she is faced with a problem she doesn't sit around having a cry, she'll actually take action to change the situation. I can't wait for Blood Promise to see how she deals with the current dilemma in regards to Dimitri.

My choices:

Rose - Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill. She's kick butt and sassy and also could handle stunts required.
Lissa - I'd say Isabel Lucas, from Home & Away. She's waif and wallflower enough
Dimitri - He's a bit old, but the guy who plans the Russian assasin in the Bourne Supremacy
Adrian - Jason Dohring, from Veronica Mars. He is completely Adrian.

Not sure about Mason and rest but love to see what someone else has to say?

I LOVED this series. Not to start something but it's SO much better than Twilight series, because Rose is such a stronger person. And hello, Dimitri could kick Edward Cullen's butt!

I won't spoil those haven't read book three, but I'd suggest reading it NOW, before someone else does.

One of my favouriiiiiitee books EVER.
I personally think it is better than twilight in a lot of ways too.
Richelle Mead definetly keep a bit more of the "classic" vampire feel by having the classes at night and stuff but also gives them a great twist by adding the specialised magic and the guardians.

Rose Hathaway - asskicking badass. Definitely NOT a "Bella".
She's not (excessively) obsessive, either.

Dimitri - not a commandeering BEEP of an Edward... hey, he also does the whole "we can't be together, it's not right thing", doesn't he? Well... it's a valid reason. AND he doesn't say "you shouldn't/can't love me".

Mason... ah, dear Mason... why the heck doesn't he get a happy-Jacob-like ending? (*coughmiacough*)

*sigh* I loved it. Wasn't written breathtakingly well, but - these are the thoughts of a teen, and teens can understand it easily... and the characters have depth to them. They're realistic - yes, sometimes they can be whiny, annoying, superficial and shallow... but aren't we all, sometimes?

this book was actually pretty decent!Though i think at times it was a bit too high schoolish slang for me as i'm gettin old lol but i still liked it!anything with vampires rocks!and i love dimitri,and devo about what happens to him! =[

in the 4th book adrian goes after rose when he notices she hasn't got back in a week. after another week of searching with the other guardians some how he finds her in some cheap motel in the center of the city having sex with dimitri.

My friend read it and (to my chagrin) told me the ending. Apparently Dmitri turns strigoi and Rose is employed to hunt him down! How can this be true?! Please, if anyone else has read it, disprove this statement!

I have also read frost bite and i am waiting for the third book Shadow kissed , i think its called.
